The attacks were committed by nineteen members of the Al-Qaeda jihadist network, one divided into four groups of hijackers, each with a terrorist pilot in charge of flying the plane once reduced and the cabin crew. The planes of American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines 175, were the first to be kidnapped, both crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the first into the north tower and the second against South shortly after, causing both skyscrapers collapsed within two hours siguientes.2 3
Four airliners were hijacked en route to California from Boston International Airport, the Dulles International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport. The four planes were bound for California, the first three planes to LA and the last plane to San Francisco, so their fuel tanks were filled with about 91,000 liters (about 65,455 kg) 0.6 The first two aircraft crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, a third into the Pentagon in Arlington County, near Washington DC, and the fourth in the open field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Some passengers and crew members of the hijacked planes were able to call on their mobile phones, reporting that there were several hijackers on each plane. A total of 19 were later identified by the FBI, four in flight United 93 and five in the other three flights.
